Why Smoke Shaft Air Testing Matters
Smoke shafts are a critical part of a fire-engineered safety system in high-rise buildings. To function correctly, each shaft must meet strict air-tightness targets—typically 3.8 m³/hr/m². A shaft that fails its air test can compromise the entire smoke-control system and prevent sign-off by the fire system contractor or Building Control.
Most smoke shafts have a footprint of about 1 m x 1.5 m, but their height can vary from two stories to over twenty.
Diagnostic Testing & Air-Tightness Surveys
With extensive experience across all shaft sizes, Air Pressure Testing (APT) provides both standard and diagnostic testing.
If a shaft fails its air test, we can perform:
-
Smoke testing to trace leakage paths
-
Thermal imaging to pinpoint hidden gaps
Our findings are compiled in a detailed air-leakage report, enabling targeted remedial sealing and a smoother re-test.
